Hildegunn Gjedrem was born in Norway. She moved to the United States in 2001 to pursue studies in Vocal Jazz at the renowned University of North Texas, where she is now completing her work on a Master’s degree in Vocal Jazz Performance.
In 2005 she was awarded “Best Jazz Vocalist” by Downbeat Magazine. Also in 2005, Hildegunn was given the G9alt Scholarship of the Arts by Sparebank 1 of Norway.
In the summer of 2006 she was one of 8 singers selected from 28 countries to travel to Switzerland and compete in the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition, judged by Al Jarreau, and was further selected as one of the finalists there.
She has been featured vocalist with the Grammy Award winning One O’Clock Lab Band on several occasions, such as their 2005 tour of Poland, their concert with legendary bassist Rufus Reid in March 2007 and will be featured again on the One o'clock 2008 Summer Tour of Europe.
She has performed at International Association of Jazz Educators Conferences (IAJE) in Toronto, Long Beach, CA and in New York 2006 and 2007. At the IAJE Festival 2008, she was featured for the first time as a non-student performer with her full band showcasing her CD to an International audience.
She is active as a freelance singer in the Dallas/Ft.Worth Metroplex, at festivals, clubs, restaurants, as a studio singer as well as with her original music.
She was a member of the Award winning UNT Jazz Singers for 5 years, 3 of which she was lead soprano. Hildegunn can be heard on the albums “Impressions” 2003 and “Traveling the Route” 2005 and "In Case You Missed It" 2007, where her writing is also showcased.
In 2006,2007 and 2008 she joined Jennifer Barnes, Rosana Eckert and Paris Rutherford as faculty at the UNT Vocal Jazz Summer Workshop. She also maintains a private vocal jazz studio.
Hildegunn is a warm and talented performer with a sound all her own. She has excelled as a writer, arranger and vocalist. Hildegunn is truly a unique voice for modern jazz.
